Mackinac Island
Native Americans founded the Island and made it home using it as a stratigic trading center. The French and later the British found the Island a lucrative trading post as well. Fort Mackinac was built by the British during the American Revolutionary War and the Island was the scene of two battles during the War of 1812.

During the late 19th century, Mackinac Island became a popular summer colony for city dwellers looking for fresh air and quiet. To keep the peace, the Island instituted a ban on personal motor vehicles in 1898 and since then, everyone gets around by foot, bicycle or horse drawn carriage.
